Perhaps the biggest sign of a strong community is helping support those who are in need.  Shirlington's community-based non-profits, Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC), Arlington Street People's Assistance Network (A-SPAN), and the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA), have all been widely recognized for how much they have done in this regard. But in today’s economic times, all of their missions are far from over. This is why YSC is setting up a fundraiser for each of these wonderful organizations.  To read more about each one and/or to donate, please click on the "Donate Now" button next to the respective organization.  The links will direct you to Razoo.com, a secure fundraising website whose sponsors pay for all credit card transaction fees to ensure that your entire donation goes directly to the charity.  You can also send checks made out to the appropriate organization and mail them to Your Shirlington Connection, Attn: Fundraiser, 2776 S. Arlington Mill Dr #233, Arlington, VA 22206.  Thank you in advance for your help!

YSC is setting a modest goal of raising $1000 for each charity this December.

Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC)                                     $0 of $1000

While our only mission is to feed the hungry, by relieving the food budget of our clients, we help prevent homelessness and allow our clients to make other necessary purchases without sacrificing their health, housing and nutritional needs. We are run entirely by a volunteer BoD, a staff of ten employees, and more than 400 volunteers from families, businesses and religious organizations.  We provide groceries to families and individuals referred to us by the Arlington County Department of Human Services, other social service agencies, and the churches of Arlington.  AFAC obtains surplus food at a minimal cost from the Capital Area Food Bank and at no cost from private donors, local bakeries, supermarkets, farmers' markets and food drives.

In 1988, two women living in Arlington County began serving bagged meals to homeless people one night a week.  This bagged meal program grew though the years to become A-SPAN.  Today, over 1000 volunteers from faith groups, schools, businesses and the community serve meals everyday through the Homeless Bagged Meal Program and help staff the Emergency Winter Shelter.  A-SPAN's services include Street Outreach, Opportunity Place, the Permanent Supportive Housing Program, employment counseling and the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program.  A-SPAN provides life-sustaining services for Arlington's street homeless.  Our mission is to secure permanent housing for one of Arlington's most vulnerable populations through outreach and relationships built on trust and respect.
